One implication of this is that it is unlikely that these bids are subject to collusion among bidders, or “shilling” on the part of sellers. Parenthetically, we also show that numbers from the naturally occurring Fibonacci and Lucas sequences also obey Benford’s Law.

Application of Benford’s Law in Analyzing Geotechnical Data
Benford’s law predicts the frequency of the first digit of numbers met in a wide range of naturally occurring phenomena. In data sets, following Benford’s law, numbers are started with a small leading digit more often than those with a large leading digit. This law can be used as a tool for detecting fraud and abnormally in the number sets and any fabricated number sets. This can be used as an ...
متن کاملDiscussion on Benford’s Law and Its Application
The probability that a number in many naturally occurring tables of numerical data has first significant digit (i.e., first non-zero digit) d is predicted by Benford’s Law Prob (d) = log 10 (
متن کاملBenford’s Law
Benford’s Law predicts the frequency of the leading digit in numbers met in a wide range of naturally occurring phenomena. In data following Benford’s Law, numbers start with a small leading digit more often those with a large leading digit. Here we demonstrate that Benford’s Law also describes a wide range of computational phenomena. In particular, we show that a number of different statistics...
متن کاملEmpirical evidence of financial statement manipulation during economic recessions
This paper uses Benford’s Law, a mathematical law that predicts the frequency of naturally occurring numbers, to investigate the occurrence of the intentional manipulation of reported financial statement numbers during recessionary times. The analysis shows that reported financial statement data generally conforms to Benford’s Law. However, in periods surrounding recessions occurring since 1950...
متن کاملAdaptive Fraud Detection Using Benford's Law
Adaptive Benford’s Law [1] is a digital analysis technique that specifies the probabilistic distribution of digits for many commonly occurring phenomena, even for incomplete data records. We combine this digital analysis technique with a reinforcement learning technique to create a new fraud discovery approach. When applied to records of naturally occurring phenomena, our adaptive fraud detecti...
